Workers use water to break down materials like wood, plant fibers, or recycled paper into pulp. If using old paper, an extra step is needed to remove previous ink markings. These processes create lots of dirty water and waste sludge. Statistics show that producing 1 ton of pulp uses 17,000 gallons (about 64,350 liters) of water. This massive water usage and energy consumption make paper mills one of the most resource-intensive industries worldwide.

Paper mills use crazy amounts of water and electricity, so they need better cleaning methods. The dirty water from production contains mud, floating junk, toxic chlorine chemicals, and oxygen-consuming pollutants. Cleaning this water requires two steps at the factory: first filtering out big particles, then using tiny organisms to break down the gunk. With good equipment design, the cleaned water can be reused, saving tons of fresh water. After cleaning, the leftover sludge becomes another headache – factories make truckloads of this goo every day. To tackle paper wastewater, settling tanks and bubble separators work best. For sludge, hydraulic presses squeeze out the water, turning it into dry blocks that can be safely burned.
